The basic functioning

Wireless cameras send the video over the air by means of a built-in transmitter which is received by the receiver. The transmitter is a RF transmitter which helps in sending out radio signals of the video images to the air. The receiver unit that captures the signal is usually connected either to a monitor or a recording device. If the receiver is connected to the monitor, the video images that are being received by the receiver get displayed on the monitor. However, if the receiver is connected to a recording device, the signals get recorded in the form of video files which can be viewed at a later time as well. Modern day receiving units of best wireless security camera systems have built-in storage which lets the system store the video footages for a certain period of time.

The cameras get powered either by electrical means or they run on batteries. While cameras that run on batteries actually make them operate without any wires, but for round the clock surveillance, running a camera on batteries may not be a very economic and viable option, unless the batteries have a lasting battery life.

Types of transmitters

There are two types of transmitters which are being used in wireless security cameras – analog and digital. The analog devices send the video data in the form of continuous strings which gets received by receivers that are operating at the same frequency range. This makes the analog transmission vulnerable to interception.

The digital transmission, on the other hand, is a more secure option. Digital receivers need to be paired with a particular transmitter, without which it would not be able to receive any signal even if it can detect the same. Pairing is the process by which both the receiver and transmitter get programmed to operate at different frequencies as a part of a cycle. This makes the data transmission more secure and ensures that no other camera in the range can intercept into the video signals.

Types of wireless

There are four different frequencies which are being used by wireless cameras to transmit the data. The first couple of frequencies, 900MHz and 1.2GHz have become obsolete now as 2.4GHz and 5.8GHz have been found to be more effective in terms of number of transmissions that can be handled by a single transmitter and the participating distance. While 2.4GHz devices can send signals to a receiver within the range of 700 feet, a 5.8 GHz wireless camera can send its video feed to a distance of about 2000 feet.
