Sacred Heart Church

Sacred Heart Church in East Palestine, Texas is a historic church and school, designed by Texas architect Nicholas J. Clayton in the Victorian Gothic style. The church and school was built to serve the railroad workers who lived in Palestine. The International-Great Northern Railroad donated the land to the Diocese of Galveston, Texas, and the construction began in 1893. The church features stained glass windows and a religious mural on the walls. In the foreground, you can see rows of pews.

The first pastor of Sacred Heart Church was Father C. M. Thion, who had previously served as a brick mason and building contractor. He dedicated the church’s statue to the patronage of “The Most Sacred Heart of Jesus.” He was assisted by Father Vitek and Father E. J. John Meagher.

After the church was constructed, the diocese purchased additional plots of land for a parochial school and cemetery. The church was completed in 1968, and in 1979, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. It is now considered an important historic landmark and a fitting place of worship for God.

The original church was 13×60 feet in size and named St. Joseph’s. However, during its pastorate, the church burned down. In 1890, the church was hosting a firemen’s convention. During this time, Father Badelon purchased a lot adjoining the church and brought Sisters of St. Agnes to start a school. In 1878, Father Badelon was replaced by Father J.J. Kearn. Under his leadership, the Sisters of St. Agnes began a school on North Jackson Street. The parish then went through a period of change, changing its name to Sacred Heart Church. During this time, Father Badelone acquired land adjacent to the church to construct a new cemetery.
